Shadow Jewellery
Marks where there should be stones, tarnish where there should be polish…
Referencing the shapes and forms of antique jewellery Gillam-Hull creates a shadow of historical jewellery. She captures a sense of loss and decay with these ghostly forms, the places where precious stones would be are left empty and shining silver left tarnished. She begins to question the presumed power and value of these pieces, that were not actually bestowing their power on to the women that would have worn them in history. They are empty promises in a time where wealth was mostly owned by men, and women’s influence was fleeting and fragile.
